elle This is the book that almost wasn’t. At the end of 2014, I had all but given up on writing. I took several months off and read craft books and reevaluated my writing life to decide if I even wanted to go on writing. By January 2015, I started writing short stories again but still not completely sure I wanted to write books anymore.
Then an email from Holly Lisle landed in my inbox offering her annual How to Think Sideways course. It was seven months long, self-paced and not cheap. After some thought, I decided this would be my last ditch effort and hoped it would be a worthy investment. The course changed my writing life. I got back to writing and Wizard King was born.
I started with the germ of an idea—a question really: What if there was a portal in a trunk? And then a sentence: A grieving young woman returns home and uncovers secrets of her true identity locked in the depths of an enchanted antique trunk—a trunk that opens a portal to Faery where she must find her mother before her life is forever erased. And final a logline: In the Age of Wizards, Time is a commodity more valuable than gold.
I finished this book in May 2016—fifteen months from the day I began brainstorming. I can’t tell you what a joy it was to write this book. To discover the characters, their lives, their loves, their past, their future. I hope you find your own escape to Faery through these pages. Thank you for purchasing and reading.
