So you’ve read a teaser from Luke and Gracie’s story. Let’s bring the heat level down a bit for an excerpt from You & I, Matt and Serenity’s story. Hope you enjoy it!
“Serenity, there’s no one here.” He raised her chin so that she could look at him.
“Please, don’t leave me.”
Matt raised a brow and she blushed.
“What I mean is, I don’t want to be alone tonight…oh shit…sorry…pardon my French. That’s not what I meant either.” She pulled away from his embrace. When she did that, Matt had the strangest feeling of being alone and a dull ache soon formed in the area of his sternum. This was his chance to case the area. While Serenity slept, he’d be able to find the weak points for the takedown.
His mouth twitched. “I know what you mean and it’s okay. I don’t mind. I’ll take the chair.”
“Thank you,” she sighed, sitting back down on the bed. “Listen, I’m sorry about this morning. I didn’t mean to be rude and not accept your offer.”
“Don’t mention it.” Matt waved a dismissive hand as he made himself comfortable on the chair. “It’s a woman’s prerogative. Just thought you could use it.”
“If I wasn’t grateful for you coming into my room, I’d have said that was a sexist remark.” Serenity winced wryly.
Matt’s brows knitted. “Which one?”
“A woman’s prerogative.”
“Women like to have a choice.” He raised his shoulders as he shook his head. “It was just a matter of fact.”
“Well then, thank you.” She smiled.
Matt watched her with hooded eyes. Damn, I wish I could kiss your mouth, take your smile and light up the darkness inside me.
“Are you all right?” Serenity asked bemused.
“You stared off into space and suddenly jerked. I thought something was wrong.”
Matt grunted. “It’s nothing. Get some sleep. I’ll watch over you.”
He was some damn operative all right. He didn’t use the opportunity being in the Turret Room to case the area surrounding Windswept. What he did was to just stare at Serenity’s sleeping form for God knows how long. Pain and exhaustion marred her face before it disappeared as the sandman drew her to his embrace. Matt saw her vulnerability at the way she curved into herself in a fetal position, the way she placed her closed fists underneath her cheeks. Her lips parted in a soft sigh letting go of the veneer of toughness he saw earlier in the day and at that moment he wanted to accept the cudgels of whatever trouble she was in and make it his own.
Matt blew a breath and looked up at the ceiling. A sliver of guilt made its way into his system knowing that he was finally in the room he wanted to be. Of all the times for a woman to affect him, of all the places to find someone he knew deep in his gut he’d shield from danger, and of all the moments when he wished he could just leave and run away with her to a place where the world couldn’t touch them, it had to be this time.
It had to be Serenity.
