Some of the best advice I ever got was from author Tina Holland when I attended my first RT Booklovers Convention: overwhelmed at the sheer size of the event, (I don’t do well in large crowds), she suggested I take the conference program and go through it with a highlighter, picking out things I wanted to attend.
Say wha? What is this magic?
Guess what? It totally helped with my crowd nerves. I had my trusty list of workshops and panels that I wanted to make sure I saw, and I kind of knew what to expect from the conference each day. I can’t say that it totally got rid of my nerves, because it didn’t, but it gave me an anchor and, in the process, helped me get a lot more out of the conference than if I’d done what I usually tended to do, which is to wander in, look around, and see what’s interesting.
Sometimes, it’s the little things.
What about you, Dear Reader? Do you have an approach to going to large (or small) events?
