Since our theme this week is the “Staying Home Party,” I figured I’d do another party ideas post – this time, on stuff to drink! ~hic~
My grandfather used to keep a full wet bar, stocked with all sorts of goodies. I loved the cocktail olives when I was a kid. But when I grew up and started homemaking for myself, I realized something: all that booze is ‘spensive!
So what’s a woman to do when trying to stock a kitchen with the musthaves for a party or overnight guests?
Here’s my system that I’ve developed over the years, and tweak as needed:
- Cola (usually Coke brand, since that’s what hub likes)
- Diet Cola
- Clear soda of some variety
- Something flavored, usually orange (because that’s what I like)
- Ginger ale
- The usual hot stuff; coffee, decaf, and tea
- We always have juice in the house, but that’s what I think of as an “extra”
In terms of alcohol, it depends on the event and the guests. Most of my friends don’t drink much, so it’s easy. What works for me is to have a signature drink for the event – for example, when my coauthor Rachel comes in town, I stock the Irish Cream. When we get together for our annual Founders Circle Writers Retreat, it’s margarita mix. If it’s my sister in law, she taught me to make a mean Bloody Mary, so I stock that.
What about you, Dear Reader? What kinds of beverages do you like to have on hand?
