Hello partiers! I hope you’re all having a grand time.
I know some of you have read my Orkney Selkies series of paranormal romances and have grown familiar with heroes Calan and Mack.
I’m currently hard at work on book 3 of the series and hope to bring it to you soon.
Set in Orkney, Scotland, these romances are filled with magic and mystery. They also feature the vibrant Orcadian mythology and folklore. Those who come from Orkney will tell you Orcadians are not your average Scots and their vocabulary reflects it. There is a Norse influence throughout the Orkney islands and it colors their language and myth. I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite bits of vocab with you here.
Gansey = shirt
Skelp = hit (In my books, you might hear my heroes threaten to “skelp” someone.)
Whalp = cheeky devil
Peedie = small (My selkies have been known to refer to their enemies as “peedie piss weasels.” That’s a great favorite.)
Old = owld
Just from these few examples, you can see it’s a colorful tongue and a colorful place. I hope you get a chance to visit Orkney, Scotland but if you can’t, my selkies would be thrilled to show you around their world.
The Orkney Selkies series is available in ebook format at Amazon, Kobo, iTunes, Google Play, B&N and All Romance Ebooks.
