In planning for this week’s party posts, I figured I’d share with you a little bit of travel talk, some anecdotes about conferences I’ve attended, and talk about my groups. In preparing for this post, I asked Google to give me “funny cat pictures travel.”
And this was one of the results.
What I want to know is, who was brave enough to cinch their cat into the suitcase, and what happened after this picture was taken?
On second thought, I’m not sure I need a blow-by-blow. Twenty claws; twenty reasons to die.
On that note…
I’m part of a fabulous group of authors called the Nice Girls Writing Naughty. If you’ve been reading my party posts, you’ll already know this, (and thank you for sticking with me this far!). The fantastic Dani Wade started the group and invited me to join, and I haven’t looked back. In the process, we’ve made some awesome friendships, created a great Facebook group, and launched a brand new website (which still has parts under construction, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled).
When I mentioned I was doing the Staying Home Party, Dani offered to contribute some material to me, so I asked her for an interview about her. This is what she came up with – and I’m sure you’ll see why Nice Girls Read Naughty! (Come on, I had to fit our tagline in there somehow! It’s me!)
Whoever created the What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas advertising campaign was one smart cookie. Now, instead of just being a casino capital, the city’s mystique has grown to a place full of fantasies and excitement.
Way too big a place for this small town Alabama girl!
How do I get myself into these things? Well, this is the RT convention, after all. I helped coordinate an event for our reader group – Nice Girls Writing Naughty – so I felt I had to be on hand to help.
The thought of a big city, bright lights and hundreds of readers is more than a little overwhelming for this introvert, but here’s how I prepared so I could (hopefully) enjoy myself while I was there:
1. Participate in Some Events
I tried to find events I could host with other authors so I’d feel more confident and not quite as in the spotlight. I want to enjoy meeting readers, not pass out from nerves.
As an introvert, I did the same for events I would attend. Workshops I’m usually good with, but parties with the need for small talk, yikes! So I arranged for friends who wanted to go to some of the same things to meet up with me. We don’t have to stick like glue, but having that base to come back to is reassuring.
2. But Not Too Much…
I’ve learned the hard way not to over schedule myself at these events. Otherwise the overload of people, abundance of knowledge, and the stress of navigating the convention space will cause me to hit a wall. It’s better for me to leave some space in my schedule—time to just hang out, or to just go back to my room and soak in the quiet for five minutes. Recharging is a good thing.
3. Easy Goals are the Best Kind
When I think about being at RT with all those wonderful authors and readers, I get really excited. But there’s also a lot of pressure as an author to stand out from the crowd. In order to have a good time, I have to let go of that pressure. Instead, I’ve set myself 2 simple goals. 1. Smile and be friendly with any readers who happen along my path. After all, we are all there because we love reading and romance! 2. Do the same with authors! See – easy peasy!
4. And Finally-Have Fun, Fun, Fun!
I’ll be honest, it doesn’t take much to entertain this small town girl! I can probably find enough bright lights in Las Vegas to dazzle me with a walk down the street. But I do have a short list of things I’d like to see while I’m there, none of which involve a slot machine. I plan to stand and gawk to my heart’s content. Travel is one of the best ways to rejuvenate a writer’s heart and soul. I plan to soak it all in!
So that’s how this girl plans to survive Vegas! If you’d like to see what I’m up to, check out the daily updates on the Nice Girls Writing Naughty blog listed above or the recap on my own blog when I get home.
Dani Wade lives in northern Alabama and yes, speaks with a southern accent. She writes sexy contemporary romance for Harlequin Desire and sexy romantic suspense (sense a theme?). Her newest release in her Small Town Secrets series, BEHIND THE SCARS, is up now and can be found HERE.
