No series of blog posts would be complete without me talking about one of my favorite pastimes – journaling! I’ve been a diarist for all of my adult life, and most of my teenage and tween years as well. I find talking to myself, with myself, and about the world I live in helps me understand it and evolve. I talk about all sorts of things – brain drain on the page, Julia Cameron calls it. In her book The Artist’s Way, she talks about the concept of Morning Pages – three pages, longhand, daily.
What I find useful about the practice is that it’s a kind of moving meditation. While I wouldn’t sit still, doing nothing, for a half hour, I can sit and write for that time. Sometimes it’s profound stuff, other times it’s just surface thoughts appearing in my mind and, through my hand, on the page. It’s taught me the discipline of sitting down at the blank page and writing whatever I hear. That’s helped me in my regular writing as well as my daily life.
