Hi everyone. today I thought I’d tell you a little more about ‘Children Of The Mist’, The second in the Destiny Trilogy ‘
‘Children Of The Mist’ is a Science Fiction romance, with what I think is a strong fantasy ‘feel’. It features Niflheim, a planet first appearing in ‘Starquest’ and some of the characters in this first book also appear in the second, although both can be read as ‘Standalones’. The planet was named after the land of cold and mist in Scandinavian folklore, and I use some of the names from Norse legend in this story. I envisaged a cold, hostile planet, colonised by explorers from Earth. This picture is how I imagine the area around Gladsheim, the principal settlement.
I’ve been asked where the inspiration for the planet Niflheim came from. Well, one evening when I stood looking out over the mountians in Wales, near my home, the mist swept in from the hills and I suddenly realised it wasn’t mist, but snow, tinged pale pink in the rays of the setting sun. As I watched, the planet gradually formed in my mind. A world, harsh and inhospitable in many parts, but in the habitable areas, beautiful and mysterious.
I peopled the more hospitable parts of the planet with Earth colonists, who establish rural, farming communities, doing away with most of the technology that brought them there. and making use of some of the planet’s most useful natural resources to make their lives comfortable. They also develop psychic abilities in order to communicate telepathically over the vast distances between their scattered settlements. Niflheim is featured in only a few chapters in Starquest, but most of ‘Children Of The Mist’ is set on that planet, and I learnt a lot about it that I had never envisaged until I started writing this second book I love world building, and had such fun developing and expanding on this icy world and her people.
