We’re a mixed household. We have three dogs and a cat. No, wait. Three cats and a dog. Two cats and two dogs?
No, I’m not crazy, and I’m not forgetting my pets. It’s just that they forget themselves.
I’ll give you an example. Our oldest cat, Boria, was raised by our dog. My husband, after we brought Boria home as a baby, was home from work during the day. He walked into the house in time to see the dog walking across the living room with the kitten hanging out of her mouth. His whole head was in her mouth. He had a moment to think, crap, I’m gonna have to tell my wife we’re short one kitten, when the dog deposited the kitten bodily in her food dish.
So he could have breakfast.
The dog resource-guards, which means she’ll bite or snarl at any other animals that come near her food or toys. Boria, it seems, is the exception. Out of all three cats, he’s the only one that Coyote lets eat her food. He, for his part, meows at her like he’s talking to her, and follows her around like she’s his Mamma.
For all we know, he thinks she is.
