Here we have both the Midsummer Solstice and a full moon in the same 24 hour period! How amazing is that? I am sure it does happen now and then but I cannot recall it any time recently so there must be some special magic in the air. And that leads me to a different sort of magic, that of the written word. That is a topic which always perks my ears up. I have loved both reading and writing all my life!
So here is a question for you. Does anyone else find pointed ears sexy? I freely admit that I do, and I don’t care if they are Vulcan or Elven or perhaps some other power-endowed race. I loved the elves in LOTR, of course, and I also loved Mr. Spock. Thus when I dipped a toe into the waters of the developing urban fantasy genre, I was pretty sure there would be some pointed ears in the crowd. Being who I am, a very independent and contrary Irishwoman, I had to do this all my way, so what I wrote had to have a sub-sub genre of its own. I call it rural fantasy.
It is just about the same as urban fantasy except it all happens out in the remote or rural areas. My characters are interacting in the woods, the fields, the desert or perhaps all of the above. My work in this area started half-timidly in a story that I had not expected to go that way at all. I had two guys, friends since childhood, who had both gone in the US Border Patrol and had the luck to end up stationed together but on patrol they encountered something definitely alien but not the sort who slips through the fence or wades a river to get here. That entity could be termed a terrorist, I suppose because it was certainly terrifying. Well, to avoid any spoilers–and this book is not yet out or even scheduled for re-release–I will admit there are no pointed ears to be seen but that started a ball rolling which has picked up speed and now most of the following tales in the loosely linked series do have some!
Here is a cover for you to enjoy, and if you look, there are some pointed ears! I’ll tell you some more about this book in a bit. Meanwhile I want to get some crystals out ready to bathe in the solstice sun and the full moon’s light to recharge their energies and protective and creative powers.
