BLURB:

Cat came back to town, and Jacob plans to keep her there!

When Catherine’s aunt dies in a suspicious accident, she comes back to her hometown to settle the estate. She expects it to be a an easy job, but she doesn’t count on being chased by a pack of wild wolves, and an unknown enemy who sprays grafitti on the house, and throws bricks through her windows. When the local police force is less than helpful it is up to Cat to find out what’s going on with the help of her all too human lover, Jacob.

Known as the Mad Trapper, Jacob has been in love with Cat since high school. Now that she’s back in town he intends to show her that a human-shifter relationship can be just what a were-cat needs to keep her out of trouble.

EXCERPT:

“Tsk. Tsk. That’s a bad one.”

She heard the trapper’s voice, but it seemed far away, and she didn’t want to come back. It was pleasant here in dreamland, far away from the pain.

His hands were as gentle as she remembered. He wrapped the soft robe around her and picked her up, holding her against his chest. Concern gave his voice a gravelly note. “Come on, Cat, don’t give up now. You’re a fighter.”

She rolled toward the welcoming heat of his muscular chest and everything went black again.

“You’re going to have to come back eventually.” That soft humor she’d grown used to hearing in his voice roused her from her dreams, threatening to draw her back into reality.

She didn’t want to go back. It hurt. Her side hurt. It was so much easier to just drift on the clouds of dreams and pretend she didn’t hear him. Soon. Maybe tomorrow. She’d go back tomorrow.

“Okay, time to get up.” His voice sounded different. Louder. More demanding. She wasn’t sure she liked it. “I know you can hear me, and you need to come back.” He sounded bossy, but she could detect a thread of concern as well. How sweet. He was worried about her.

His warm hand on her back sent a wave of unexpected lust through her. She purred softly and turned, enjoying the feel of his hand sliding across her skin. It had been a long time since she’d gotten laid. And he was really cute.

Now where had that thought come from? Everyone knew shifters and humans were a bad combination. Her parents were prime examples of just how bad a mixed mating could be. She had to focus here, and not let her hormones rush her into something she’d regret.

“Feeling frisky after your long nap?” Humor laced with the relief in his voice.

Cat cracked her eyes open just enough to see him. Tall. He’d always been big, but he’d filled out nicely since their last encounter. The gangly teenager had been replaced by a man

Crisp dark hair curled out of control, tempting her to run her fingers through it. His shoulders were wide and muscular, and she remembered how solid his chest had felt when he’d picked her up that first night. His chest narrowed to lean hips and long thick legs. He looked like he spent a lot of time being active.

She stretched languorously and reached up to run a finger down his nose, tracing the aristocratic curve. It was a nice nose. It suited him. Firm but bossy. Yup, that described her mad trapper to a T. He’d always seemed older than he was, with sharply etched features and darkly luminous eyes that could see right through her.

“Come on, time to get up.” He removed his hand, and Cat whimpered at the loss. “I need to make sure you are okay before I let you go. Can’t have you fainting while no one’s around to look after you.”

He had a name. The teachers hadn’t called him the Mad Trapper in high school. Cat struggled to remember, her mind still fuzzy from sleep. Jim? Jack? Jerry? Jacob!

“Good morning, Jacob.” She let the heat running through her veins show in her voice. “It’s been a long time since you kept me in a cage.”

“You’re a bit too big for a cage these days.” His gaze swept her sheet-covered body, and she could see a spark of desire there. “And yet you still come running to me for help.”

“I needed to get the wolf pack to leave me alone. They’re afraid of you.”

“With good reason.” He held out a hand to help her to a sitting position. “I wouldn’t hesitate to kill anything that threatened you.” The corner of his lips curved up in the tiniest of smiles. “If they were shifters, or full human, I might draw the line at just scaring them. The sheriff looks the other way if I break the hunting regulations, but he frowns on murder.”

Had he really said that? He’d kill to protect her? She looked into his eyes. Liquid pools of darkness. She could lose herself in those eyes, and never care. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

The smile became a full-blown affair, involving his entire face. Did he know how cute he was when he smiled? Yeah, he probably did.

Cat reached up and wrapped her arm around his neck, pulling his face down to hers so she could place a wet kiss on that smiling mug. For an endless minute he kissed her back, his mouth moving over hers with a heat that seared her to the tips of her toes. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feel of his tongue exploring the depths of her mouth. Amazing how good that could feel.

 Then he pulled away.

Huh?” Cat opened her eyes. “Why did you stop?”

Nice to have a big strong male to protect you and that the wolf pack is afraid of.
