EXCERPT (from Faith’s Gift by R. Brennan):

Richard stopped at the last door on the right. “My room is in here.” He pushed open the door to reveal an ebony four-poster bed. Lengths of intertwined red and black silk draped from and wrapped around the cross beams connecting the spired corners. Fluffy white pillows lay in stark contrast to the black satin coverlet, and at its foot, sat a large, wooden chest that reminded Faith of a seventeenth century pirate’s treasure. Tall, ebony dressers with brushed pewter fixtures graced either side of the massive bed, lending the room an almost gothic feel. Yellow light, cast from twin wall scones centered above the each dresser, gave the room a dark intimacy.

“Wow.” The giant bed dominated the room. Faith couldn’t take her eyes off of it. What could one person need with that much bed? It had to be wide enough to sleep four comfortably. A possible use of the space flashed in her mind, and her face flushed. She tried not to notice how close he was, how easy it might be to reach out and touch him, pull him toward the bed.

Richard pointed to the door to the right of one of the dressers, startling Faith from her wicked thoughts. “There’s a full bath through there, same décor as the main bathroom.” He swung the opposite arm up, pointing to the door on the other side of the room. “And that’s the walk-in closet there.”

Faith nodded and tried not to look at the bed again.

He led her back into the hall and headed back toward the living room, leaving the door across from the master bedroom unexplored. Her brow furrowed. “What’s in there?”

Richard stopped and swung back around. His shoulders lifted in a shrug. “Just a storage space. Boxes, crates, and tons of dust. Nothing worth seeing.” He flashed a disarming smile. “All the good stuff is across the hall in my room.”

“Oh, I’m sure it is,” Faith whispered before heading up the hall after him. She rounded the corner and walked straight into Richard’s chest.

His strong arms wrapped about her, drawing her tighter against him. “Were you interested in finding out if what I say is true, little lamb?” His warm breath kissed her forehead.

She lifted her chin, meeting his emerald gaze. She thought about Sebastian in the arms of his hussy, his lack of concern at being caught in the act, in their bed. He’d blamed her for the whole thing, called her boring and predictable. What do you think of your boring, predicable ex now, asshole?

Faith’s answer came in a breathless exhale. “Absolutely.”

Richard’s soft growl sounded in her ear. His mouth captured hers.

Hot tingles of current started at the point of contact and radiated outward until her limbs sung with electricity. The kiss was bruising, and there was no mistaking the power he wielded over her body. Faith relinquished control, whimpered against his crushing mouth, and pressed herself against him. Her hands slid up his hard chest.

Before she even noticed his arms no longer held her against him, Richard’s iron grip caught her wrists. A quick twist and push, and both of Faith’s arms were pinned behind her back. Useless.
